Critical Point for Students: Past tense here is NOT past time! Past form = Imaginary now.
Example: If I HAD money → I don’t have money NOW.

Basic Structure

Pattern A (If first): If + Past Simple (V2) , Would + Verb Base
Example: If I won lottery, I would buy a new phone.

Pattern B (If second): Would + Verb Base + If + Past Simple (No comma) Example: I would buy a new phone if I won lottery. (Same meaning)

Short forms for speaking: I would = I’d, You would = You’d, He would = He’d, We would = We’d

Grammar Tip: Could vs Would vs Might
Would = definite result in imagination (100% sure in dream)
Could = ability / possibility (I would be able to)

If-clause negative

Main clause negative

Rule 5: Order Change & Punctuation

* Order 1: If + Past, + Would… (Need COMMA)
If I had money, I would buy laptop.

* Order 2: Would… + If + Past (No comma)

Rule 6: WAS vs WERE – Exam Tip Most Important!

In Second Conditional, use WERE for all persons in formal writing / IELTS / exams!

Casual movies/conversation: If I was you… (You will hear this, it’s okay casual)
Exam/Formal: If I were you… If he were… If she were… (Always correct, safe!)
